Reflections on the CMCF Anti-Racism Symposium

In May 2024, Go Equal joined seven other leading organisations to co-deliver the CMCF Anti-Racism Symposium at the Australian National University in Canberra.
Hosted by the Canberra Multicultural Community Forum Inc (CMCF), the symposium brought together 70 participants for a structured conversation about racism facing CALD communities. Go Equal was proud to collaborate alongside FECCA, the ACT Human Rights Commission, Diversity Council Australia, the ARISE Project at ANU, and the EU’s Erasmus+ Program to make it happen.
The program was anchored by keynote addresses from three influential voices, Professor Kim Rubenstein, Sheetal Deo, and Dr Karo Moret-Miranda, whose presentations combined expertise with personal storytelling. A wide-ranging panel discussion followed, drawing in perspectives from policymakers, politicians, industry, students, and community leaders, facilitated by Dr Joyce Das.
A survey on participants’ racism experiences was conducted on the day, and later extended online, to begin building a community evidence base. The symposium closed with participatory activities that produced tangible outcomes: an Anti-Racism Action Group, a Community Leaders’ Networking Group, and the foundations of a Collective Impact Action Plan.
Over 90% of participants rated the event as highly engaging and inclusive, highlighting the power of the personal stories shared. More than 75% described it as informative, thought-provoking, and timely. Feedback poured in after the event from participants eager to stay involved and collaborate further.
This project embodies Go Equal, collaborating with partners to amplify community voices, and help translate shared values into shared action. The CMCF Symposium was another wonderful opportunity for Go Equal to create lasting change in community.
